Know the Difference Between All-Season Tires & Winter Tires

Tires are an often overlooked area of vehicle ownership that makes a difference when it comes to getting around mid-Michigan efficiently and safely. This is especially true as we start approaching winter driving conditions in our area. As such, you should know the advantages and disadvantages of all-season tires and winter tires. Thelen Kia in Bay City, MI is happy to help you understand the differences between the two and when to have them on your favorite Kia vehicle! If you want a new set of either style installed on your Kia, you can count on our Service Center to get you the best set of tires possible for your Kia.

All-Season vs. Winter Tires

All-Season Tires – When you see vehicles roll around mid-Michigan, chances are they are riding on all-season tires. Generally accepted as “regular” tires, these are the go-to for everyday cruising conditions. They also can handle rain-covered roads well when they feature appropriate tread depth. While not ideal for snow-covered or icy roads, they can manage if they are newer and have not been heavily worn down.

Winter Tires – If you want to ensure that your Kia has the highest amount of grip possible when the snow starts falling in mid-Michigan, you might want to opt for a set of dedicated winter tires. These tires are made of a different rubber compound than all-season options to keep them softer when the temperature drops. They also have deeper treads and special tread patterns to maximize the amount of snow that is removed from underneath the vehicle. Little grooves on the surface of the tires also aid in providing extra grip on icy roads. It is not advised to drive on winter tires throughout the year. Not only will they get gradually worn down and have reduced effectiveness on the conditions they are meant for, but the ride these tires have is rougher because of the deeper tread and grooves.
